Recent Exhibition
My favourite gallery in Cumbria, Upfront, hosted my latest exhibition. My intention was to present all aspects of Egypt, both Ancient and Modern. Little did I know, however, that a revolution would break out in Cairo, just two weeks before I was due to hang the show. I had to quickly re-think. I decided to dedicate the reception area as a tribute to the wonderful people of Egypt, with images from Facebook that Egyptian friends had sent us. This led into a section on rock-art, and our work on the Eastern Desert Survey. Then on to images from the classic sites, deserts, and oases. I noticed a favourite with some of the men, were images of the abandoned WWII trucks in the Western Desert.
I also constructed several artefacts to give the whole exhibition a 'museum feel'. Upstairs, I had a video tower showing a looped film on 'Street Life' with a background track of street sounds, as well as portraits, and actual examples of dolls made by local children.
I do have an illustrated talk based on the show, that gives more detail and depth, should anyone or any organisation be interested.
Last Deed on Earth
The life of Ernst Franklin
In 2002, I put on an major exhibition highlighting the life and works of Victorian Egyptologist, Ernst Franklin. The concept was of a man, who having made stunning finds in the Valley of the Kings, returned to England with his copy paintings, only to be ridiculed and branded a charlatan. With his life's work being described as: “profane and loathsome putrifications,” the shame was too much, he took his own life. The tomb was destroyed by earthquake, the only evidence remaining were his drawings, now ordered to be destroyed by his wife. Fortunately this did not happen. The drawings and artefacts went 'underground' into the hands of private collectors. PLEASE SHOW ME MORE
Schoolroom
This short film came about because I was haunted by two separate images. One taken by myself in a derelict schoolroom in Arizona USA, the other taken over 50 years before in a school playground in Hamptstead England. PLEASE SHOW ME MORE
Fallen Angel
I was asked some time ago to design a series of window panels for a church. The theme was angels. The panels were to be etched and sand blasted, so the design would be basically, black and white. Although the glass company chosen to manufacture them were in seventh heaven about my designs, nothing short of a miracle would ever convince the church to accept them. Sometimes it's hard to let go of work that one has invested a lot of energy in, so I re-worked some of the elements into a series of prints for me. PLEASE SHOW ME MORE
